A fire broke out at the 400 kV Manali Substation in Chennai on Thursday night, causing power outages in several areas of the city. The incident led to tripping at multiple substations, including Tondiarpet, Basin Bridge, and Pulianthope, which are connected to the North Chennai Thermal Power Station. As a result, parts of the city like Manali, Madhavaram, Kolathur, Tondiarpet, Purasawalkam, Perambur, Otteri, Egmore, T Nagar, and Adyar experienced blackouts.
Many residents took to social media to report the outages, which began around 10 pm, and sought clarification from TANGEDCO, the city’s electricity provider. TANGEDCO chairman Rajesh Lakhani stated that efforts were underway to bypass the damaged equipment and restore power swiftly. The restoration process was expected to be completed within two hours by backfeeding power from other substations.
